Main partners of the Micromouse.UTAD project

The Micromouse.UTAD project has, since the beginning, a set of partners such as a university, one of the best research centers in Portugal, an association of companies with a view to an innovation network in Aveiro and a robotics society that aims to promote and encourage teaching, scientific research, technological development and applications (industry and services) in the field of robotics.

About us

University

The University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, based in Vila Real, is an institution oriented towards the creation, transmission and dissemination of culture, knowledge and science. Located in a developing region, it encourages entrepreneurship, in close relationship with the community, its bodies, institutions and business fabric, deepens scientific knowledge, develops technology and seeks to respond to global, national and regional problems.

Robotic Society

The Portuguese Robotics Society was founded in April 2006. The membership is open to individuals and institutions (academy and industry). Our main goals are to foster education, scientific research, technological development and applications (industry and services) of robotic systems. Our annual event is the Portuguese Robotics Open, including robot competitions for university and high school levels, as well as a technical conference which has been co-sponsored by IEEE in last few years.

Research Center

INESC TEC is a private non-profit research association, with Public Interest status, dedicated to scientific research and technological development, technology transfer, advanced consulting and training, and pre-incubation of new technology-based companies.

Innovation Network

Inova-Ria - Association of Companies for an Innovation Network in Aveiro, founded in 2003, is a non-profit organization whose purpose is the creation and consolidation of a cluster in the area of Information Technologies, Communication and Electronics, with special focus on telecommunications, centered in the Aveiro Region.

Project

Micromouse.UTAD is a STEM project of Educational Robotics composed of several modules

MicroPontiki

The MicroPontiki is a robot hardware kit for teaching robotics and participating in the Micromouse Portuguese Contest

STEM Modules

The STEM modules is a set of mobile robotics learning activities using the MicroPontiki kit

Micromouse Contest

The Micromouse Portuguese Contest is the official competition (international Micromouse competition) in robotics where MicroPontiki kit holders, and others, can show in a competition all the knowledge acquired

Robotics Demonstrations

The project also includes robotics demonstrations where, in addition to the Micromouse, other robots are demonstrated (eg the humanoid robot NAO)

Testimonials

Words of comfort from important personalities in this Micromouse universe. From highly prestigious international competitors, president of the Portuguese Society of Robotics to people involved in the organization of the most important Micromouse competition, the All Japanese Micromouse.

The Portuguese International Micromouse Contest is one of the highlights of the year - meeting friends old and new who are both contestants and collaborators.

Peter Harrison

Micromouseonline

The long history of Micromouse has provided innovative thinking ahead of its time. The sensor equipped electric vehicles of today and self-drive cars of tomorrow are comparable technologies in the construction of Micromouse. The well organised UTAD contest ensures both spectators and competitors an inspiring experience.

Being a robotics challenge, where STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) areas are required, the micromouse competition gathers students, researchers, professors among others as a team into a real scenario where a robot must be developed and programmed to compete. Several competences must be acquired by the students, not only the technical ones (electronics, algorithms, path planning, optimisation and others) but also soft skills that will be required in future, such as critical thinking, creativity, problem solving attitude and teamwork just to mention a few. Having this in mind, I completely recommend to participate in such competition, that will for sure be fruitful and a learning by doing opportunity.
